Will Smith lost his cool when he snapped and slapped Chris Rock. It was disgusting. He won an Oscar that evening, and also became the biggest loser in Oscar's history. What lessons can we learn about this terrible event?
TakeSlap at TakeSlap.com is a thought provoking blog. We put words together to keep you on your feet thinking about the human condition and how to cope with it.
Remember, in the end we will be dust. First worm food, then dust. What matter is not what happens in the end. What matters is what we do now in the present. This is precious time that we can invest improving ourselves so that we can enjoy this brief experience called life to its fullest potential.
Most people are obsessed with success. Consciously or unconsciously, we imagine that success will save us from the human condition. That is not the case. Regardless of how successful we may be, we remain trapped by the human condition.
Take Will Smith as an example and learn from him. He turned the most successful night of his career into a fiasco. Will can redeem himself and we hope he does. Donating time and resources to anger management charities would be a good start.
Three Lessons Coming to Mind
Temperance is the most important virtue.
Perhaps, the most important virtue of all, self control is key to enjoying life. Temperance is what Will Smith needed that evening. He let the lizard part of his brain to take control. In so doing, he jeopardized his name and reputation.
Success can breed failure.
The higher we get in the success ladder, the harder we can fall. Will Smith fell hard that evening. Now he needs to stand up and climb back safely.
Sometimes losing can be winning.
Chris Rock demonstrated great temperance, and succeeded by graciously taking the slap. Chris Rock was a slap taker and the absolute champion of the evening. Many times in life, losing is winning. Being the "loser" taking the slap so well, turned Chris Rock into the absolute winner.
