Aborting democracy?


The Christian American Taliban (CAT) confederacy strikes again. Trending on Twitter today was "she's 10", about the state of Ohio forcing a 10 year old girl to continue a pregnancy. Conservatives are against abortion for religious reasons. There is supposed to be a separation of church and state in our country. However, the creed of one Nation "under God" is hard to beat.

Liberals think that conservatives are dumb. The fact is that conservatives are smart and savvy when it comes to political activism. Conservatives vote. Conservatives are mobilized by the church to the polling stations to support conservative initiatives and elections.  

Democracy is not perfect, but is better than the alternative. 

Democracy is a substitute for war. In the old days political power was gained or lost by waging war. Europe was a bloody violent continent besieged by constant war. Europe's history is essentially the bloody account of white tribes invading other white tribes ad nauseam.

Perhaps it is not that whites are inherently more violent and belligerent than other tribes. Maybe is that we have more evidence and detailed descriptions of their epic affairs. In any event, Europeans are also credited with the invention of democracy.

The past

The Greek civilization was the first major European civilization. Greece is closer to the Middle East and Africa where other civilizations had formed first. The Greek developed a system by which the citizens could elect their leader. 

Under democracy, rather than the leader being selected by force, the leader is elected by vote. Instead of the "king" of the winning army becoming the ruler, the citizens could vote to elect the rulers. Not every one was a citizen with voting rights. Women, slaves, immigrants, and other disenfranchised undesirables of the times could not vote. That is a story for another post.

The present

Fast forwarding to the present day here in the United States, all adult citizens can vote. Women can vote, and slavery is no longer legal. Therefore, there is no excuse for not voting and making your will heard. 

If you are not in favor of what the "Christian American Taliban" ultra conservative Republicans are doing, get active and vote. Democracy depends on the active participation of everyone.

The future

 Even with full participation, the future of democracy is never guaranteed and many democracies find their ways to become autocracies. Imagine if Trump had succeeded at the J6 coup. Perhaps there would not be a war in Ukraine as the USA was pulled out of NATO and Putin would have waited longer to take the whole continent. Perhaps gasoline would be cheaper as it is in Venezuela. But is that what we really want? Are we really looking into kill our democracy?

Pardon seekers will be pardoned

Economic inflation and political deflection are at record highs. The Nation learned today that some Republican / conservative members of Congress proactively sought presidential pardons for their involvement in federal crimes trying to keep Trump in power after the losing the 2020 presidential elections. These politicians will not accept any guilt whatsoever, and will not be abandoned by their core supporters. These pardon seekers will allege that they sought pardons knowing that the evil Democrats would "fabricate" charges against them. Their MAGA supporters will not believe them, of course, but will support them anyways. Many liberals can't understand conservatives, and vice versa. For example, many liberals or progressives have a hard time understanding how conservatives can say that they would vote for Trump even after knowing what Trump did after losing the 2020 presidential elections; or how they can support these pardon seekers.
