Humans are storytelling primates. What sets humans apart from all other animals is the capacity to generate images in our brains (imagination) plus the ability to share those images from brain to brain within a community (communication).
To generate images, our brains receive external input and process it into images or imagery output. What we "see" is not what is out there, but rather what our brains project internally. We "see" the images that our brains produce after processing the input received from out there.
Most healthy and sober humans perceive the same or very similar reality because we all have the same receiver, processor, and projector (the human brain). The mentally ill or the otherwise impaired (e.g. by alcohol, drugs, etc) may perceive a different reality.
Other animals also perceive different realities based on their processors and evolutionary programming. Different organic computers (animals) perceive different realities based on their different sensory and processing capacities.
Within the same species of animals, organisms perceive a similar external reality. Dogs perceive the same or very similar dog world reality. Cats do the same; dolphins; whales; eagles; etcetera. As members of the same species, they have similar sensory processors and projectors (brains) making them perceive a similar "objective" reality.
The difference between humans and other animals is not only that we have a relatively advanced brains, but that we can share images and ideas between a brain community (communication) by using languages or codifying technologies (tools and methods).
More to follow on our communication capabilities in the next post. Stay tuned.
