Abortion is fascinating
Abortion is an excellent topic to explore humanity. Humans are storytelling primates. The stories fed into our brains influence the decisions we make. As all other animals, humans are controlled by the pain / pleasure mechanism of life. All our animal ancestors survived avoiding pain and seeking pleasure. This pain / pleasure survival mechanism survived in all of us. This mechanism controls our opinions about abortion. It also controls the lies we tell ourselves.

Pain and pleasure
Slap Consulting reminds you that everything we do--absolutely everything--is controlled by the pain / pleasure algorithm of life. The tricky part about humans is that we can alter our pain / pleasure mental associations.
Humans can associate physical pain with mental pleasure, and vice versa. Stories trigger our emotions, which in turn create our mental pain / pleasure associations. We are interesting and funny creatures. We are big time liars too. That may sound like a different story, but is actually the same. Humans lie all the time to avoid pain and to seek pleasure.
Don't judge yourself for being a liar. Even our Supreme Court justices lie all the time. Take for example the testimony under oath by the Trump justices. They swore not to reverse Roe v Wade.
The right thing
In all of our confusing human stories and lies, many fall for the illusion of righteousness. As Elon Musk and Tesla would say we aspire to do the "right thing". It's only an aspiration knowing that we will fail. We will accommodate conveniently the definitions of right and wrong to appease our fears and please our desires.
Humans say that they will do the "right" thing. What is right and what is wrong is always an opinion. It is also evolving and constantly changing. Not surprisingly, humans shape their understanding of what is right and what is wrong based on primitive pain / pleasure dynamics.
Humans also lie when the right or wrong decisions affect them personally. For example, one thing is to say in principle and about others that women should not be allowed to abort unborn children. Another thing is having to carry personally the burdening consequences of a government ban on abortion.
Many righteous Americans--most of them on the so called right side of the political spectrum--say that the government should criminalize abortion. The moral argument is that it is not right to kill an unborn human. For many, this right vs wrong judgment comes from religious stories and beliefs. In their view, mortal women do not have the right to interfere with the will of god in conceiving that life in the womb. Others allude to altruistic reasons such as avoiding pain and suffering to the unborn creature.
Big and little lies
Many righteous people say that they vehemently oppose abortion. Let's use some imaginary examples and guess how they may react under the trying pressures of challenging hypothetical circumstances.
-Imagine that a blonde 16-year old daughter of a righteous Southern man is raped by a gang of five black men. The girl is pregnant. Any one of the five black rapists can be the biological father. Do you think this Southern man will be in favor or against abortion in this instance?
-Imagine that the wife of a righteous man is raped by a psychopath serial killer. The wife who is 44 years old would be risking her life to have the child of the serial killer. Do you think the righteous husband would be in favor or against of abortion in this instance?
-Imagine that a caring and compassionate couple is expecting a fourth child. The doctor informs them that the child will be born with an incurable genetic disease that will guarantee a life of physical pain and suffering. Medical expenses will most likely bankrupt the family. The three siblings will be impacted financially and psychologically for the rest of their lives. Do you think these parents would appreciate having the legal option and medical option of considering a timely abortion?
-Imagine that a caring woman with terminal cancer gets pregnant? There is also a 50% chance that the unborn will develop the same type of rare cancer as a child. Do you think the terminally ill mother or her husband would consider abortion?
-Imagine that a 24-year old black woman and mother of five black children from four different men is pregnant. She's a drug addict and survives from welfare and prostitution. She is inclined to accept the free counseling services of Planned Parenthood to end this sixth pregnancy. She looks forward to having more children in the future when things get better in her life. Do you think the government should force this woman to have the sixth child?
-Imagine that this up and coming conservative politician, married with children, gets his secretary pregnant. The secretary is willing to end the pregnancy quietly, and move back to her hometown. Do you think this politician will pay for the abortion?
