80% of Americans are overweight. 95% of Americans would like to lose fat. Food prices are rising. Inflation is at a 40 year high, if not more. This is a perfect opportunity to embrace the challenge of eating less to enjoy more.
Food prices are increasing
In free markets, prices are set by supply and demand. Supply refers to what sellers offer or "supply" for sale. Demand refers to what buyers want or "demand" to buy. Prices are set by the interaction of supply and demand. When demand is high, and supply is low. prices increase. When demand is low, and supply is high, prices decrease.
The U.S. economy is at full employment with record low unemployment. Everyone who wants a job, finds one. That puts a lot of dollars out into buyers' hands causing demand to increase. If supply is low or remains constant, prices increase.
Most Americans want prices to go down. For prices to go down, demand would have to decrease, supply would have to increase, or both.
Americans are gaining weight
In human bodies, weight is set by caloric intake and output. Intake refers to the calories (energy) that people consume. Output refers to the calories (energy) that people use. Whatever caloric intake that is not used or wasted, is stored in the form of excess fat in the body.
Americans are overweight because we have consumed more calories than what we have burned. As children, we get used to eating three meals a day plus snacks to support growth and high activity. As adults, we continue the habit and tradition of three or more meals a day even though we are no longer growing and not as active. The result is overweight Americans all around.
Most Americans want fat weight to do down. For fat weight to go down, food intake would have to decrease, energy output would have to increase, or both.
Saving money and losing weight
High food prices can help us buy less food. If you don't buy those delicious Oreo cookies, you save a few bucks and help yourself eat less. If you don't buy those dead meats, you save a lot and save the lives of fellow animals. If you avoid most packaged foods in the grocery store, your savings increase and your caloric intake decreases.
Perhaps you prefer buying as much cheap and delicious food as possible. You want to eat three times a day plus have a few snacks to deal with the pain and anxiety of being alive. That is all fine and dandy, but you will be spending a lot of money and inflating yourself up. The extra weight and fat obesity will bring many costly diseases that will shorten your life and ruin your finances.
The choice is yours. You can pray for low food prices to keep inflating yourself to death. Alternatively, you can be grateful about food inflation and see how it can help you prioritize your grocery shopping. Buying vegetables and legumes will help you save a lot of money. Eating less will help you live more. You can learn to associate the mild physical pain of hunger with the mental pleasure of saving money and improving your health.
